| Although the cutting action is similar to
that of the single handed elbow adzes, these two handed adzes have advantages
and disadvantages. They are certianly more powerful and less taxing on the forearm than the single handed adzes, as the whole body is more involved in the work. The drawback is that both hands are needed. So they probably aren't as
useable for bowls and masks, where it is common pratice to hold and position the workpiece with one hand while swinging the adze with the other. But when the workpiece is firmly held down,
these two handed adzes are powerful wood removers. These adzes came about because some people in the remote outer islands of Yap State (in Micronesia) contacted me about making some large adzes for their canoe building. Here is an entry in their blog that tells about our collaboration. To offer these adzes as part of my regular line I decided to put the bend in the steel, instead of the wood handle. The two holes in the shaft allow a very simple handle. There is no having to deal with a crook (as with the elbow adzes) or snugly fitting the handle into an oval hole. Although these adzes could be used with a long handle (about 32 inches) to hew beams while standing on them and swinging the handle vertically, they are designed to be used with a shorter handle (about 23 inches) and swung horizontally. I highly encourage people to make their own handles. Blades are 3 1/2 inches across. Handles are 23 inches long. Gutter, blade only $275 The edge has a rounded profile and is cupped to about a six inch diameter curve. The main bevel is 20 degrees, with a microbevel on the inside (concave side) of the blade. This is a very aggressive wood remover. | |

Straight, blade only $250
The edge has a rounded profile and is very slightly curved on the bottom, so it doesn't dig in at the edges. The main bevel is rather fine at 15 degrees, with microbevel on the inside.
This is not meant to be a big wood remover. It does a great job of flattening and cleaning up after the gutter adze.
